On Thursday 25 June 2026 at 14:00, Anne Sofie Baymler Lundberg defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Care and treatment of people with type 2 diabetes - Continuity of care across sectors and potentially inappropriate prescribing".

Patients with type 2 diabetes frequently develop comorbid conditions, leading to polypharmacy and multiple healthcare contacts across sectors. Addressing a specific aspect of T2D management, this PhD project focuses on appropriate medication and continuity of care across sectors.
The project comprised two register-based studies and two studies examining the implementation and effects of cross-sectoral virtual conferences between general practice and hospital.
The first register study showed that patients with type 2 diabetes and a high education level have more shifts between the sectors compared to those with a lower level. The second register study showed that a substantial proportion of patients with type 2 diabetes did not received cardioprotective medication despite recommendations. This was especially the case with women and those living alone, who were generally at increased risk of not being initated on recommended medication.

A randomised controlled trial showed that the general practices that had participated in virtual conferences had a signifcant larger proportion of patients receiving cardioprotective medication compared to the control group. A supplementing process evaluation showed that the intervention was feasible and well implemented. However, the general practitioners had differing views on whether the model should become a permanent model for cross-sectoral collaboration. Some suggested that virtual conferences may be valuable when new guidelines are introduced to general practice.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in Merete Barker Auditorium, (1253-211), Aarhus University. Please see the press release for more information.
