On Friday 5 June at 14:00, Josefine Jul Jarbæk Nielsen defends her PhD dissertation entitled “Epidemiological Studies About Myasthenia Gravis: Incidence, Mortality, and Associated Autoimmunity”.

Myasthenia gravis is a rare autoimmune disease of the neuromuscular junction that causes muscle weakness and increased fatigability.

The thesis consists of three nationwide registry-based studies using Danish health registries. The first study shows an increasing incidence of myasthenia gravis over more than 35 years, driven particularly by a rising incidence among older patients. The second study demonstrates increased short-term mortality early in the disease course, whereas long-term survival is comparable to that of the general population after adjustment for comorbidity. The third study shows increased prevalence of other autoimmune diseases both before and after diagnosis.

Overall, the thesis contributes to a better understanding of disease development, prognosis, and autoimmunity.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in Auditorium J116-113, Aarhus University Hospital and on Zoom. Please see the press release for more information.
