On Thursday 1 December at 14.00, Lia Barbosa Valdetaro defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Characterization and clinical application of 3D dosimeters in spot scanning proton therapy".

Radiotherapy is a cancer treatment modality where high-energy radiation is used to kill malignant cells. To ensure safe delivery, detailed knowledge of the radiation beam, and how the dose is deposited in the patient, are required. To that end, routine measurements are performed with a variety of dosimetry systems. In this thesis, dosimeters capable of measuring dose in three dimensions were investigated for proton therapy. First, their response was characterized in a simple setup, and then used to measure patient-specific fields, i.e. the same fields given to patients receiving radiotherapy.

Overall, this dissertation provided insight into the response of a deformable 3D dosimeter for protons therapy, and proposed a few cases were they can offer additional insight in patient-specific measurements.
