On Friday 19 August at 14:00, Tara Ballav Adhikari defends his PhD dissertation entitled "Community-based Intervention for Prevention and Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Nepal".

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of death and illness globally. More than 80% of COPD deaths occur in low and middle-income countries like Nepal. Despite this high disease burden, there is limited data on COPD, and there is a knowledge gap on the approach to address this disease in these countries. Therefore, a PhD project under Aarhus University assessed the usefulness of lay community health volunteers-led intervention in the prevention and management of COPD in Nepal. This study estimated the community-based prevalence of COPD in a semi-urban area of Western Nepal. Also, it demonstrated the feasibility and beneficial effects of simple female community health volunteers-led home-based educational intervention to cope with the increasing burden of COPD in Nepal.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in Samfundsmedicinsk Auditorium (building 1262), Bartholins Allé 4, 8000 Aarhus C. Please read the attached press release for more information.
