On Friday 3 May at 14.00, Karen Busk Hesseldal defends her PhD dissertation entitled "The ART of Trust: Guiding Residents to Surgical Independence. An explorative study of training structure and surgical autonomy".

Workplace-based learning in the field of surgery has developed a strong focus on competency-based assessment tools and measurable skill acquisition. An overall goal of these assessment tools is to determine a trainee's readiness for independent clinical practice. In this assessment, trust is an essential element, which is difficult or even impossible to quantify and assess. However little is known about how supervisors base their trust decisions when granting trust to surgical residents. Gaining more in-depth knowledge about the elements that influence supervisors’ trust decisions may help us develop and adopt a more holistic approach to surgical education and assessment.

The results from this PhD thesis provides insights into the present organisation of workplace-based learning, focusing on curriculum and assessment strategies that facilitate progressive autonomy.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place on Regionalhospital Gødstrup in "AULA". Please see the press release for more information.
