RESEARCH YEAR

Faculty scholarships for research year are stopping

Important change: From 2025 research year students will no longer be able to apply for a scholarship from Health. All applicants must now secure external financing before applying.

The faculty has, until now, offered 20 scholarships a year financed by Aarhus University’s Research Fund (AUFF). This opportunity for funding is stopping due to cutbacks at AUFF. For future students, who are considering a research year, this means that they will have to have external financing in place at the time of application and the Head of Department must guarantee this, as before.

The application process has also been updated. This means, amongst other things, a shorter process.

  • The deadline for applications has been pushed forward to mid-May and mid-November (as opposed to mid-April and mid-October)
  • It will be crucial for your application, that you have attached a financial statement with a guarantee from the Head of Department
  • It will now be the relevant graduate programme leader who will assess the applications
  • If there are more qualified applicants than places, then grades from your bachelor’s degree will determine selection.
  • If you are thinking of applying in the next round, then you should be aware that the next round of applications will open mid-April. The new templates and sets of guidance will be available on the PhD school’s website by 1st April at the latest.

Don’t worry if you are in the middle of an application. There are very few changes to the information that we require from you. You can also still expect a reply in June and December.

The faculty has 112 research year places and the majority of students today have already financed their research year via external financing.

A Research Year gives Medical and Dentistry students enrolled at Aarhus University a unique opportunity to learn and become acquainted with relevant methods, scientific literature and research in general.

The Research Year at the Graduate School of Health is 1 - 2 semesters fulltime research at one of the departments at the Faculty of Health.

It is possible to apply for enrolment for less than 12 months (2 semesters). However, the student must be enrolled for minimum 1 semester, and the outcome must be equivalent to 2 semesters (12 months) of fulltime research, in order to complete the Research Year. Also, the student must apply for special leave during the Research Year. See the rules regarding special leave at the AU Student Portal.

During the Research Year, you complete a defined project under supervision.

For more information, please read the guidelines for Research Year.

How do I apply?

You apply through our online application form when there is an open call. In our application guide, you can find information about how to fill in the online application form.

Calls for application for enrolment and/or scholarship are announced twice a year. The deadlines are mid-May and mid-November.
