On Thursday 6 June at 14:00, Louise Engelbrecht Buur defends her PhD dissertation entitled "ShareD dEciSIon making for patients with kidney failuRE to improve end-of-life care (DESIRE): A complex intervention".

Care and treatment in relation to kidney disease is handled by the kidney specialists at the Danish hospitals. In addition, the kidney specialists help people with kidney failure to handle palliative decisions and decisions about care and treatment at the end of life. However, this is done differently. A new PhD project from Aarhus University, Health has therefore developed and tested an intervention to support end-of-life care planning and decision making between patients with kidney failure, their relatives, and the health professionals in kidney services.

In the conduction of the project, patients with kidney failure, relatives, and health professionals have been involved as research partners in the research process. By using different research methods and collecting and processing data, the results from the PhD project contribute to the intervention DESIRE, comprising a training programme for the health professionals, shared decision making conversations between patients, relatives, and the health professionals, and a patient decision aid. DESIRE has been tested in a pilot multicentre randomised controlled trial, which suggests that it can be used in clinical practice and supports patients with kidney failure, their relatives, and health professionals in planning the patient's care and treatment at the end of life.
