On Friday 4 September at 14:00, Anne Vittrup Jakobsen defends her PhD dissertation entitled “Towards risk and biology adapted treatment in anal cancer”.
Most patients with anal cancer are cured with chemoradiotherapy. However, treatment is associated with substantial long-term side effects, and despite treatment with curative intent, a proportion of patients will experience disease recurrence. Currently, most patients receive similar treatment, but better methods are needed to identify patients at high risk of recurrence and late effects, thereby enabling treatment intensity to be tailored to the individual patient’s risk.
The PhD project investigated how a more personalised treatment approach can be achieved through the use of blood-based biomarkers and an improved understanding of treatment-related late effects. Among the key findings, the project demonstrates that fragments of tumour-derived DNA can be detected in blood samples and may help identify patients at increased risk of recurrence at an early stage. The project also provides new insights into the association between radiotherapy and long-term bowel and bone toxicity. Finally, the dissertation presents data supporting an alternative and safe chemotherapy regimen that may be used in selected patients.
The summary is written by the PhD student.
The defence is public and takes place in auditorium C114-101, Aarhus University Hospital. Please see the press release for more information.
