Review process

All applications are reviewed by staff and faculty. The review process takes about 4 weeks. For information on when to expect a reply, please consult the timeline for processing of applications.

  1. All applications are screened for completeness and eligibility.
  2. The relevant Head of Graduate Programme reviews your application by examining the nature, extent, and quality of your research activities and the role you play in this research.
  3. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available places, the qualified applicants are ranked according to their weighted grade average from their bachelor level courses.
  4. All applicants receive notification as to whether they have been accepted.

Selection criteria

All applications are divided according to graduate programme and reviewed by the Head of Graduate Programme.

  • Quality: Does the project description indicate the applicant’s familiarity with the concepts and methodologies of the field of study? Does the project description show clarity and depth? Is the project description well-prepared and the project well-articulated in the student’s own voice? Is the student able to place the research in a broader context? Is the student able to articulate his/her responsibilities and how they relate to the overall research project? Is the project feasible within the available time, resources, and competences?
  • Extent: Does the research project correspond to 12 months of student research under supervision?
  • Impact: What is the student’s investment in the research experience and what is the level of participation? Do the learning goals demonstrate independence and academic and educational development? Do the learning goals correspond with the potential learning benefits of the research experience? Are the courses relevant?

The list of criteria is not a checklist, and they do not correspond to a certain percentage or weight. The criteria are factors that the reviewer will consider when evaluating your application.

There can be only two outcomes to the evaluation: qualified or non-qualified.

Ranking by grade average

The Heads of Graduate Programme will jointly decide the final ranking if two or more applicants with the same weighted grade average occupy the cut-off for available places. The weighted grade average must include completed bachelor’s level courses only. The weighted grade average must be stated with one decimal only.

Notification

All applicants receive notification at the end of the review process. Successful applicants will receive an offer of enrolment and be asked to submit documentation for leave from your study programme for the duration of the entire Research Year enrolment period.

If you did not receive an offer of enrolment, you are welcome to contact us for feedback on your application and to re-apply at an upcoming application deadline.
