On friday 9 October 2026 at 13:00, Benjamin Bach Green defends his PhD dissertation entitled “Characterization of Aquaporin-2 Trafficking and Spatial Organization and Its Relationship with UT-A1 Using Expansion Microscopy and Super-Resolution Radial Fluctuations”.

The kidneys play a crucial role in regulating the body’s water balance. An important part of this function is carried out by the protein aquaporin-2 (AQP2), which acts as a water channel in the kidney’s collecting ducts. When the body needs to retain more water, AQP2 is moved to the surface of principal cells, allowing more water to be reabsorbed.

In his PhD project, Benjamin Green has investigated how AQP2 is organised within kidney cells and how the protein is transported in response to the body’s need for water. Using advanced microscopy techniques, he has been able to study AQP2 at a scale smaller than what can normally be resolved using conventional light microscopy.

The project provides new insights into how AQP2 is organised and transported within kidney cells, and how this relates to another important protein, UT-A1. A better understanding of these mechanisms may, in the long term, contribute to our understanding of diseases in which the body’s regulation of water is disrupted.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in AIAS Auditorium, 1632-201, Aarhus University. Please see the press release for more information.
