On Wednesday 23 September at 15:00, Camilla Termansen Erichsen defends her PhD dissertation entitled “A multimodal characterisation of Brodmann Area 46 layer III in schizophrenia and depression”.
Schizophrenia and depression are serious psychiatric disorders that can affect how people think, perceive the world, and interact with people. Difficulties with memory, attention, and problem-solving affect everyday functioning, yet these cognitive symptoms remain difficult to treat.
The research focused on Brodmann Area 46 in the frontal part of the brain. Using human brain tissue, the project examined thousands of genes and proteins, including selected proteins important for the communcation between brain cells, to elucidate the biological changes associated with the disorders.
The studies suggest that psychiatric disorders are associated with subtle changes across several biological processes rather than one single molecular change. Together, the findings contribute to a more detailed understanding of the biology of schizophrenia and depression and may guide future research in elucidating mechanisms underlying cognitive symptoms.
