On Friday 4 September at 13:30, Emma Falling Iversen defends her PhD dissertation entitled “CD8+ T-cell mediated control of HIV”.
Despite effective treatment, there is still no cure for HIV, and people living with HIV require lifelong antiretroviral therapy. CD8+ T-cells play an important role in eliminating virus-infected cells, but HIV has developed strategies to evade these immune responses. The project investigates the role and potential of CD8+ T-cell-mediated control of HIV, both in developing novel immunotherapeutic strategies towards a cure for HIV and in understanding the mechanisms underlying sustained viral suppression.
For example, the findings demonstrate that vaccination can induce robust CD8+ T-cell immunity that can be redirected using a novel immunotherapeutic approach to eliminate HIV-infected cells. In addition, CD8+ T-cells from an HIV post-intervention controller showed potent antiviral activity in an animal model. Together, these findings support the continued exploration of immunotherapeutic strategies aimed at optimizing CD8+ T-cell function towards a functional cure for HIV.
The summary is written by the PhD student.
The defence is public and takes place in the auditorium at C115-124/126, Aarhus University Hospital. Please see the press release for more information.
