On Friday 2 October at 14:30, Johan Kløvgaard Sørensen defends his PhD dissertation entitled “The Effects of Popliteal Plexus Block as an Adjunct to Multimodal Analgesia Following Total Knee Arthroplasty”.
Total knee arthroplasty is a common orthopaedic surgical procedure offered to patients with severe knee osteoarthritis. Despite continuous optimization of postoperative pain management, up to one in three patients still experience moderate to severe pain during the first 24 hours after surgery. This may impede early mobilisation and increase the need for opioids, with a consequent risk of complications and opioid-related adverse effects.
In this PhD project, we investigated whether adding a novel analgesic peripheral nerve block, the Popliteal Plexus Block, could optimize current multimodal pain management following total knee arthroplasty. Peripheral nerve blocks currently recommended and used in clinical practice primarily target sensory nerves originating from the anterior aspect of the knee. Therefore, adding a Popliteal Plexus Block, which targets sensory nerves originating from the posterior aspect of the knee, may further optimize postoperative pain management.
At the start of the PhD project, the clinical effects of the Popliteal Plexus Block had only been investigated in a small hypothesis-generating pilot study. We therefore conducted three randomized clinical trials to investigate the effects of the block on pain, opioid requirements, and early mobilization following total knee arthroplasty, its potential impact on lower limb muscle strength, and whether using a larger volume of local anesthetic for the block could further optimize postoperative pain management.
