On Friday 23 October 2026 at 13:00, Katrine Astrup Sørensen defends her PhD dissertation entitled “Development and feasibility evaluation of a cognitive rehabilitation intervention across the ICU-to-home pathway”.
After critical illness, many patients experience problems with memory, concentration and lack of mental energy. These problems can make it difficult to participate in rehabilitation and resume everyday life.
In the PhD project, two cognitive rehabilitation approaches were developed in collaboration with former intensive care patients, relatives, healthcare professionals and experts. One approach consisted of mindfulness exercises, while the other included different brain-training activities.
The approaches were subsequently tested among patients in intensive care units at Aarhus University Hospital and Kolding Hospital and were designed so that patients could continue using them after discharge from the intensive care unit.
The project provides new knowledge about how cognitive rehabilitation can be developed and adapted for patients during and after intensive care. This knowledge can inform further work to develop rehabilitation that considers patients’ different needs and capacity to participate.
The summary is written by the PhD student.
The defence is public and takes place in Auditorium J116-113, Aarhus University Hospital. Please see the press release for more information.
