On Friday 29 May 2026 at 14:00, Lea Kirstine Hansen defends her PhD dissertation entitled “Laparoscopic transabdominal cerclage: Indications and late effects”.

In some women who are at high risk of preterm birth or late pregnancy loss, the uterine cervix may be supported with a cerclage. A cerclage is a stitch that aims to maintain a long and closed cervix throughout pregnancy. The cerclage can be placed through the vagina or by keyholde surgery through the abdomen, however it is not always clear which method is best for each woman.

With the PhD project "Laparoscopic transabdominal cerclage: Indications and late effects", it was investigated how to better identify women who may benefit from cerclage treatment, and whether a permanent abdominal cerclage is associated with late effects. The project also contributes to quality assurance of vaginal cerclage and forms part of the basis for an international randomised trial comparing the two treatments.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in Auditorium G206-142, Aarhus University Hospital. Please see the press release for more information.
