On Friday 30 October at 9:30, Livie Yumeng Li defends her PhD dissertation entitled “Foundation Models for Retina Images in Diabetic Retinopathy Classification and Cardiovascular Risk Assessment”.
Diabetes is a systemic disease and can affect the eyes and the cardiovascular system. Diabetic retinopathy can lead to vision loss, while people with diabetes are also at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Retinal images provide information about both the small blood vessels in the eyes and the wider cardiovascular system, creating an opportunity to use a single, non-invasive image to assess different aspects of health. The project examined how modern artificial intelligence models can learn clinically relevant information from retinal images and how reliably these models perform across different populations and imaging settings. The research highlights both the potential of retinal images as a source of health information and the importance of carefully evaluating artificial intelligence models before they are used in clinical practice.
The summary is written by the PhD student.
The defense is public and takes place at Verdensrummet (A201-170), Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus at Aarhus University Hospital, entrance A or via Zoom. Please see the press release for more information.
