On Friday 25 September 2026 at 14:30, Mads Brüner Kristensen defends his PhD dissertation entitled “In vitro arthritis models for drug target discovery and validation - Exploring known therapeutics in novel ways”.
Inflammatory arthritis is treated with a range of medicines that suppress different parts of the immune system. However, it is difficult to predict in advance which treatment will work best for an individual
patient. There is therefore a need for methods that can be used to study how different medicines affect the inflammatory processes underlying these diseases. Such methods have been investigated in a new PhD project from Aarhus University, Health.
In the PhD project, different laboratory models were investigated as tools for studying how medicines work. These included immune cells from the joint fluid of patients with inflammatory arthritis, as well as blood cells in which different types of inflammatory responses were induced under controlled conditions. The researchers then examined how the cells responded to different types of treatment.
The results show that these cell models can reflect known differences in how medicines work, but also that their effects depend on both the individual donor’s cells and the type of immune activation being studied. The project therefore contributes to our understanding of how laboratory models can be used to investigate existing treatments and explore new uses for medicines that are already available.
