On Wednesday 13 May at 13:00, Mads Christian Lamm Larsen defends his PhD dissertation entitled ”Integrated Molecular Mechanisms of Thrombosis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus”.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues and organs. The disease can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, and blood vessels and is associated with an increased risk of blood clots (thrombosis).
In his PhD project, Mads Christian Lamm Larsen investigated the molecular mechanisms behind this elevated risk. The results show that thrombosis in patients with lupus is not only caused by traditional risk factors. It also arises from a complex interplay between the immune system, inflammation, platelets, the inner lining of blood vessels, and the blood coagulation system.
The project includes studies of newly diagnosed patients who had not yet started treatment. This provided a unique opportunity to investigate early disease mechanisms and identify changes before treatment influences the results.
The research indicates that several biological systems are activated early in the disease course, which may contribute to the increased risk of blood clots.
The findings suggest that a better understanding of these mechanisms may improve identification of patients at particularly high risk. In the longer term, this may support more precise and individualized prevention and potentially reduce serious complications
The summary is written by the PhD student.
The defence is public and takes place in Bartholin Auditorium, Building 1241-135, Aarhus University and online. Please see the press release for more information.
