On Friday 11 September 2026 at 14:00, Malene Aastrup defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Identifying Ovarian Cancer – Can We Do Better?
Exploring Hyperpolarized [1-13C]-pyruvate Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Metabolomic Biomarkers in Clinical Settings". 

Ovarian cancer is a serious gynaecological malignancy with high mortality, and many women are not diagnosed until the disease has reached an advanced stage. Therefore, early diagnosis is important, and accurate characterisation of adnexal masses is essential, as it directly influences treatment decisions, including surgical planning. In this PhD project, two novel approaches based on metabolic biomarkers are explored: 1) NMR-based spectroscopy and 2) hyperpolarised MRI. The project investigates whether these two methods can improve the diagnosis of ovarian cancer by detecting and characterising adnexal masses, providing more direct insight into their biology and metabolism, and thereby contributing to the diagnostic work-up of ovarian cancer.
Through clinical studies, these perspectives are investigated in a new PhD project from the Faculty of Health, Aarhus University.
