On Friday 6 November 2026 at 14:15, Mette Foldager Hindsholm defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Ischemic Stroke in Atrial Fibrillation. Risk of Recurrence and Bleeding in Patients on Oral Anticoagulation".
What happens to patients with atrial fibrillation who have had an ischaemic stroke and receive preventive anticoagulant treatment? This question has been explored in a new PhD project from Aarhus University, Health.
Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder that increases the risk of ischaemic stroke. Anticoagulant medication is an important part of preventive treatment, but some patients still experience a stroke. At the same time, treatment carries a risk of serious bleeding. A better understanding of outcomes in these patients is therefore needed to optimise preventive treatment.
Through a literature review and two nationwide registry-based studies, the dissertation examines treatment and prognosis in patients with atrial fibrillation and stroke. It focuses on the risks of recurrent ischaemic stroke, serious bleeding and death in patients receiving anticoagulant treatment after an ischaemic stroke. It also examines the implications of discontinuing treatment.
The project contributes to a better understanding of the balance between stroke and bleeding risks and may support efforts to tailor preventive treatment to the individual patient.
The summary is written by the PhD student.
The defence is public and takes place in Auditorium G206-142, Aarhus University Hospital. Please see the press release for more information.
