On Friday 4 September at 14:00, Mojdeh Mansoori defends her PhD dissertation entitled “Painful temporomandibular disorders and headache in young adulthood: Early-life factors and multidimensional clinical characterization”.

The press release: Painful temporomandibular disorders (p-TMD), pain in the jaw joint and chewing muscles, affect around one in four young adults and often occur together with headaches. Using data from the Danish National Birth Cohort, Mojdeh Mansoori studied the condition from three angles: teenage diet, early-life pain, and detailed clinical characteristics.

The first study examined dietary quality at age 14. Overall diet quality had little effect on later jaw pain or headache, though eating more fiber and fish, and less added sugar, was linked to a modest reduction in headaches years later.

The second study found that children with frequent or severe pain in the neck, mid-back or lower back before puberty were up to twice as likely to develop jaw pain and headaches as

young adults, suggesting that early pain patterns may signal a broader, lifelong vulnerability to pain.

The third study, based on clinical examinations of young adults with and without jaw pain, found that those affected reported more psychological distress, more frequent headaches, and greater pain sensitivity.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in building 1613, room 049, Department of Dentistry and Oral Health, Aarhus University. Please see the press release for more information.
