On Thursday 20 August 2026 at 10:00, Nina Stødkilde-Jørgensen defends her PhD dissertation entitled “Prognosic Factors in Heart Failure”.
Modern treatment has greatly improved survival for people with heart failure and heart attacks. Even so, some patients remain at high risk of serious complications and premature death. Identifying these patients is essential for providing the right treatment and follow-up.
This PhD project investigated factors associated with prognosis in patients with heart failure and in patients admitted with a non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Using nationwide Danish health registries together with detailed medical records, the research examined how age, heart function and the extent of coronary artery disease influence survival.
The studies showed that patients with reduced heart function continue to have substantially higher mortality than people of the same age in the general population, despite advances in modern treatment. The findings also demonstrated that combining information on heart function and coronary artery disease improves prognosis prediction after a heart attack.
The project further examined the use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), devices that can prevent sudden cardiac death in selected patients. Overall, the findings contribute to more accurate risk assessment and may support more individualised follow-up and treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease.
