On Friday 25 September at 13:00, Rasmus Roost Aabling defends his PhD dissertation entitled “Clinical application of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells”.
ow do you move from a promising idea for stem cell therapy in the laboratory to clinical testing?
This question is at the heart of a new PhD project from Aarhus University, Health. The project investigates how adipose-derived stem cells can be developed from a promising area of research into a treatment suitable for clinical testing. The work spans regulatory requirements, development of the cell product, handling procedures, and clinical evaluation. The project was carried out by Rasmus Roost Aabling, who is defending his PhD dissertation on 25 September 2026.
An important part of the project has been to investigate how the stem cells can be produced, cryopreserved, thawed, and handled while maintaining their quality and suitability for clinical use. As the final part of the project, the treatment was evaluated in a clinical study involving 80 patients with knee osteoarthritis.
The project contributes to bridging the gap between laboratory-based stem cell research and the development of new treatments for patients.
