On Monday 16 November 2026 at 14:00, Simon K. Kjær defends his PhD dissertation entitled “Feasibility, kinetics and metabolic effects of (R)-1,3-butanediol (S)-lactate ester (LaKe)”.

Lactate and ketone bodies are naturally produced in the body and function both as energy sources and signalling molecules. In recent years, interest in supplementing these substances through the diet has increased, but options for ingesting lactate in particular have so far been limited.

In his PhD project, Simon K. Kjær investigated a newly developed, drinkable molecule, (R)-1,3-butanediol (S)-lactate (LaKe), which releases both lactate and ketone bodies after ingestion.
The project focuses on whether LaKe can be consumed safely, how it is metabolised in the body, and how it affects, in particular, appetite and glucose and fat metabolism.

The results show that it is possible to increase the levels of both lactate and ketone bodies utilizing LaKe. At the same time, the studies suggest that these naturally occurring energy substrates may influence several key aspects of the body’s energy metabolism.

The research therefore contributes new knowledge about lactate and ketone bodies and provides a basis for future studies of their potential applications in nutrition and disease.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in "Verdensrummet", auditorium 210-170, Aarhus University Hospital. Please see the press release for more information.
