On Friday 6 November 2026 at 13:00, Simon Storgaard Jensen defends his PhD dissertation entitled “Reoperation Risk and Mortality after Hip Fracture Surgery: Comorbidity, Mobility, and Treatment”.

Hip fractures are among the most serious consequences of osteoporosis and affect approximately 7,000 people in Denmark each year. Many patients experience postoperative complications, and around one in ten undergoes reoperation within a year. A new PhD project from Health at Aarhus University examines the role of patients’ other health conditions, mobility and choice of surgical treatment.

Research has primarily focused on the surgical procedure, although reoperation risk has remained relatively stable over the past decade. The dissertation therefore examines patients’ health and function in four nationwide studies based on Danish health registries.

The studies explore physical and mental disorders and combinations of conditions in relation to the risk of reoperation and death. They also examine basic mobility before the hip fracture and its recovery by hospital discharge. Finally, two surgical treatments are compared in older patients with dementia and displaced femoral neck fractures: hip replacement and stabilisation with metal implants.

The findings may help identify vulnerable patients and inform research into more targeted treatment, rehabilitation and follow-up.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place Auditorium, Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Aarhus University Hospital. Please see the press release for more information.
