On Tuesday 15 September at 14:00, Sofie Skoubo defends her PhD dissertation entitled “My Avatar - the use of telepresence robots to enhance participation for students with NMD in the Scandinavian education system".
Students with neuromuscular diseases (NMD) often experience substantial school absence due to their condition. Although Scandinavian education legislation stipulates that school absence should be compensated for, research shows that significant challenges remain in ensuring students' academic and social participation.
The overall aim of the PhD project was to investigate experiences with the use of telepresence robots for students with neuromuscular diseases in the Scandinavian education system. The project explores opportunities and challenges of implementing telepresence robots in a Scandinavian context experienced by students with NMD, teachers, and community care stakeholders. The research comprises three studies. The first study compares education legislation concerning school absence and chronic illness in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The second study investigates the reflections of community care stakeholders involved in implementing telepresence robots in the education system. The third study explores the interactions between students with neuromuscular diseases and teachers when using telepresence robots in educational settings.
The findings suggest that telepresence robots have potential to enhance students' opportunities to participate in education when they are unable to attend school physically. At the same time, the research demonstrates that successful implementation depends not only on the technology itself but also on supportive legislation, effective organisational structures, and meaningful interactions among students, teachers, classmates, families, and municipal stakeholders.
