Thank you for your participation in the PhD Day 2017!
We, in the Organizing Committee, would like to express our gratitude for a successful PhD Day 2017. Under the theme “Science – Keep it simple”, PhD and research year students from Health, Aarhus University joined the PhD Day 2017 with 300 posters and 30 oral presentations.
This year’s keynote speaker was the internationally recognized cancer researcher and biologist Mina Bissell, who with great personal enthusiasm presented how the surrounding environment has a fundamental effect on the behavior of cancer cells. Later, Martin Vesterby from INNO-X Healthcare, Institute of Clinical Medicine, talked about innovation, creating value, and how to make a good cocktail.
The day was completed with a party, which was moved in the last moment to Radisson Blu due to a double booking from Centralværkstedet. This led to a free bar for the entire evening, which together with festive speeches and a crowded dancefloor set the frame for an excellent night.

Subsequently, we have received a lot of feedback from the evaluation forms, which were distributed. Out of 383 receivers, 284 have replied, and the overall response is very positive. We appreciate the many replies and comments to the PhD Day 2017, which we will keep in mind when planning the PhD Day 2018.
We are aware of the challenges regarding lack of space especially for the poster sessions. Unfortunately, these are the current conditions with the high participation and a limited number of available rooms. Meanwhile, this set-up enables more than 300 young researchers to present their research independent of current stage. We hope for an equally high attendance next year.

The PhD Day party venue has been changed!
The party will take place at Radisson Blue Scandinavia Hotel, Margrethepladsen 1, DK-8000 Aarhus C. from 18:30 to 02:00 (time unchanged).
We invite you to register for the PhD Day dinner party 2017.
The evening will start on Friday 27 January at 6:30 pm and finish at 02:00 am at Centralværkstedet, Værkmestergade 9, 8000 Aarhus C. The seats will be distributed on a first come first served basis.
Deadline for registration is on 23 January 2017.
A three course meal will be served, followed by awarding prestigious prizes and a festive speak. After dinner there will be music from a DJ. The price for all this is 175 DKR.
For all participants in the dinner party there will be free tickets to "Kupé" afterwards.
It is not possible to cancel your ticket and receive a refund, however you are most welcome to give/sell your ticket to a colleague in case you are detained from participating. Please remember to send an e-mail to Helle Mellerup and advise your name and the name of your colleague.

All 1st year PhD Students and Research Year students are invited to submit an abstract. All 2nd and 3rd year PhD students are expected to submit an abstract, which will be printed in the abstract book.
The annual PhD Day is an occasion for Health to present the width and the quality of all the PhD projects at the graduate school of Health and all PhD students are therefore expected to participate. It is a mandatory part of the PhD education at Health. Absence due to e.g. maternity/paternity leave, sick leave, illness, or studying abroad is of course allowed.
It is expected that all PhD students participate in at least two PhD Days during the enrolment period. Attendance and presentation is worth 1 ECTS point (up to a total of 3). You register for the day by submitting your abstract.
Research Year students are also invited to attend the PhD Day, submit an abstract and present a poster, as well participate in the evening party.
All staff members of Health are invited to participate in the PhD Day as well as the evening party.
All PhD students at Health should submit an abstract describing either the results obtained or (for those who have only just started) describing the project. The abstracts will be presented in the abstract book.

The maximum number of characters for abstracts is 1700 (including spaces).
When submitting the abstract you have to specify your current year in PhD, choose if your research is “Basic” or “Clinical”, and you have to choose the key words that best describe the area of your research.
If you are third year PhD student, you have to choose your preferred role as “co-chairman” or “oral”.
You have to write the name of your main supervisor, as well as specify which GP you are enrolled in.

Even if you have not had any new results within the last year, you are still expected participate in the PhD Day and to submit an abstract. Do not reuse an old abstract – rephrase it and give it a new title.
All PhD students who submit an abstract presents their project at a poster session.
During the poster sessions you present your project to the selected chairmen of the session.
3rd year PhD students (a limited number of students) will be asked to present their project orally.
The selection of abstracts for Oral Presentations on the PhD day will be based on the following:
• The ability to present your abstract in a manner that will ‘Keep it Simple’ - also for scientists outside your own field.
• The scientific quality of the presented research and the coherency of the abstract.

Please note that a small fee will be charged for participation in the evening party and that seats may be limited.
The Fogh Nielsen Legacy, which is awarded for excellent achievements in PhD research, is now open for applications. The grant is given for continuation of the PhD research. Three PhD students will be selected for presenting their project at the PhD Day and will compete for the grant. Only PhD students that submit their dissertation before 17 October 2017 can apply. Please note that deadline for submission of applications is 17 October 2016 at noon.

The PhD Day will include exciting talks from excellent speakers, including keynote lecturer Mina J. Bissell, distinguished scientist, Life Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as well as poster/oral presentations, the Fogh Nielsen Prize competition, and the well-renowned evening dinner party. Again this year, the dinner will be held at Centralværkstedet.
As the PhD Day is the annual meeting point for all PhD students, everyone is expected to participate:
• First year PhD students and research-year students are invited to submit an abstract and present a poster.
• Second year PhD students are requested to submit an abstract and present a poster.
• Third year PhD students are requested to submit an abstract. Students will be selected for either oral presentation or to co-chair a poster or an oral session.
All supervisors are invited to participate in the PhD Day, and to contribute as chair for an oral or a poster session.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 1 November 2016, and the online submission of abstracts will be open from 15 September 2016.
Attendance with submission of an abstract and presentations/acting as a co-chair will be awarded with 1 ECTS point.
