Call for applications for a fully financed PhD fellowship
Call for applications for a fully financed PhD fellowship at the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital.
This three-year PhD project focuses on developing and evaluating advanced methodologies for quantitative dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, combining tracer kinetic modeling, AI-based reconstruction, and comprehensive motion correction. The goal is to improve accuracy, robustness, and clinical feasibility of parametric imaging.
The project investigates three key kinetic models: the irreversible Patlak model, reversible delayed Logan model, and semi-reversible generalized Patlak model. Optional extensions include perfusion modeling and cardiac applications.
A central component is correction of motion and imaging bias/noise. The project will integrate AI-based CT-to-PET registration for improved attenuation and scatter correction, inter- and intra-frame motion compensation, and AI denoising techniques to enhance image quality and quantitative reliability.
The work is structured into three subprojects:
* Evaluation of indirect parametric imaging using AI-based reconstruction versus conventional reconstruction (OSEM) with/without denoising, focusing on quantitative accuracy and noise.
* Development of clinically feasible multiparametric imaging protocols based on short 20 min dynamic scans with/without blood input function. The project will compare kinetic models and explore model selection strategies suitable for routine clinical use.
* Investigation of direct reconstruction of parametric images versus indirect methods, including comparisons of accuracy and noise.
The project aims to deliver robust, motion-corrected, and clinically practical parametric PET workflows to advance quantitative PET imaging in oncology. It is conducted within a strong interdisciplinary environment with expertise in PET physics, kinetic modelling, and AI.
The PhD student will be part of an active and positive research environment at the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital, with the opportunity to work for 3 years at the front end of quantitative PET imaging and contribute to advancing future healthcare. There will be strong industrial and international collaborations with leading specialists in the field.
