Cardiovascular

The Cardiovascular PhD programme at Health, Aarhus University offers enrolled PhD students with a project in the cardiovascular field the possibility to undergo a specialized education emphasizing research and training in cardiovascular diseases.

The programme's overall goal is to highlight and strengthen the ongoing research and training in cardiovascular diseases at Aarhus University, and increase the PhD students' awareness, knowledge and understanding of various critical aspects within basic, clinical, and epidemiological cardiovascular research. The programme offers specialised courses, guest lectures by international key opinion leaders in the field, interactions with fellow peers and annual meetings. The programme also aims to foster a culture of rigorous analysis and scientific integrity through critical appraisal of cardiovascular research.

All PhD students with a project that fits into the field of cardiovascular research are encouraged to apply for enrolment into the cardiovascular programme.

Below you can read about the compulsory activities in the cardiovascular programme.

Additional relevant activities will be provided on the website on an ongoing basis and can include PhD courses and cardiovascular summer schools.

Please contact the heads of the subject-specific programme for questions about the activities.

PhD course

The Cardiovascular Research Tool Box: From lab to clinical trial

Please note, PhD courses offered in 2025 can be found in PhD Course Management from October 2024.

This 3-day course provides a broad overview of the principles within basic, epidemiological and clinical cardiovascular research. The course aims to teach critical aspects of designing, conducting and interpreting cardiovascular research.

  • Day 1 provides insights into conducting basic/pre-clinical research that uncovers molecular mechanisms in cardiovascular development and diseases, with a special emphasis on the generation and use of animal and cell models.
  • Day 2 focuses on epidemiological aspects of studying cardiovascular diseases, including the use of clinical data sources and registries in Denmark, as well as epidemiological study design.
  • Day 3 covers clinical research and clinical trials, including principles of clinical research, designing and organisation of clinical trials, ethical considerations and frameworks.

The course comprises plenary talks, seminars, discussions and workshops on key considerations, critical appraisal of study results and insight into regulatory pathways, along with available consulting services at Aarhus University/Aarhus University Hospital (i.e. CONNECT).

Annual meeting

Each year the programme hosts the Annual Cardiovascular PhD Programme Meeting. The annual meeting will be held in conjunction with the Cardiovascular Network Annual Meeting, which is typically scheduled in the autumn.

The Annual Cardiovascular PhD Programme Meeting includes plenary talks and panel discussions on academic career paths in cardiovascular research by leading national and international cardiovascular scientists in research and industry. The meeting will also include workshops on communication and dissemination skills in cardiovascular science. Outline of the annual meeting:

  • Day 1: Cardiovascular Network Annual Meeting: PhD students enrolled on the Cardiovascular PhD Programme are encouraged to present a poster/talk on this day.
  • Day 2: Annual Cardiovascular PhD Program Meeting: this meeting includes networking opportunities, panel sessions with discussions (e.g. on career advice for clinicians and basic scientists, presentation skills, work-life balance, grantsmanship, studying and working abroad), talks and lectures.

International guest lectures

Lectures from leaders in the field will be held quarterly. The lectures will cover various topics within the cardiovascular field (i.e. academic career paths, disease-specific state-of-the-art lectures).

Planned speakers for 2024/2025 include:

Journal club

Each PhD student must participate in a journal club throughout enrolment in the cardiovascular programme.

Relevant journal clubs in the cardiovascular field include:

  • AU Department of Cardiology Journal Club
  • NIDO journal club
  • Pulmonary and cardiovascular pharmacology journal club
  • CAVE lab journal club
  • Cardiovascular Physiology Journal Club
  • Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Journal Club

You can find information about the journal clubs in the database

Peer-to-peer

The peer-to-peer sessions will focus on the academic and personal development of the PhD students enrolled into the cardiovascular programme.

Participants will meet at least 4 times annually and present their work to peers outside their own research group. This can include new data, challenges in their research, or drafts of posters that will be presented at national or international meetings.

Peers and senior researchers will provide feedback. Senior researchers will also be responsible for guiding the peer-feedback process during the meetings. The meetings will strive to foster a safe-space, which provides optimal conditions for peer-feedback, learning and development.

Participation and diploma supplement

Participation in compulsary and voluntary activities must be documented by the PhD student in MyPhD.

To obtain a diploma supplement specific for the subject-specific PhD programme, the PhD student must participate in the five compulsory activities:

  • Log all 5 completed activities in MyPhD
    • One subject‐specific PhD course
    • One subject‐specific annual meeting
    • One international guest lecture
    • One peer‐to‐peer round of sessions
    • One journal club
  • Complete a consecutive 30-days (or more) environmental change, preferably abroad
