Eske Willerslev is an evolutionary geneticist. He is particularly known for sequencing the first ancient human genome and establishing the field of environmental DNA, where modern and ancient DNA from higher plants and animals are obtained directly from environmental samples.
Willerslev was born in Denmark in 1971. After spending his youth as explorer and fur trapper in Siberia, he established the first ancient DNA laboratory in Denmark and obtained his DSc at University of Copenhagen in 2004. At the age of 33, Willerslev became Full Professor at University of Copenhagen - the youngest in Denmark at the time.
Throughout his career, Willerslev has led numerous international research collaborations that have transformed our understanding of human evolution and migration, biodiversity, ancient pathogens, and the ways in which species and ecosystems have adapted to environmental change through time. His research is founded on close collaboration with scientists across genetics, geology, archaeology, ecology, environmental science, bioinformatics, and other disciplines, demonstrating how interdisciplinary approaches can generate transformative scientific discoveries.

In this book (Kan man tænke sig rask), he presents the foundation behind it all: science’s answer to what happens in the connection between mind and body. He has travelled around the world and interviewed more than 40 of the leading researchers in the field, while also immersing himself in scientific articles and studies to determine what we actually know with a reasonable degree of certainty.
The PhD Day is an annual event taking place on the third friday in January as a joint venture between the PhD Association and the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University. The day seeks to bring PhD students together and network across the broad diversity of scientific fields within health sciences that are represented at the faculty.
The PhD day is a chance for you to present your research to your peers as well as to more experienced researchers.The event also offers the chance for you to act as co-chair during the presentations, giving you the opportunity to get experience with acting as a scientific panel member in a conference.
The PhD Day will as always include a keynote lecture. In addition, we invite you to join us for the Fogh-Nielsen prize competition and for the JCD prize award ceremony.
