PhD project

Bisphosphonate Prior to Parathyroidectomy in Primary Hyperparathyroidism

Call for applications for a fully financed PhD fellowship

Project description

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is an endocrine disease marked by elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and hypercalcemia, commonly due to hypersecretion from a single adenoma. Complications include osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease (CVD), renal calcifications, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. The only definitive cure is parathyroidectomy by which the affected gland(s) are removed by surgery.

In this project we aim to further address potential complications to PHPT with specific focus on the bone, but also CVD and renal consequences are elucidated. Performing a randomized clinical trial, effects of treatment with a bisphosphonate prior to parathyroidectomy are elucidated.
