Apply for a Research Year

Faculty scholarships for research year are stopping

Important change: From 2025 research year students will no longer be able to apply for a scholarship from Health. All applicants must now secure external financing before applying.

The faculty has, until now, offered 20 scholarships a year financed by Aarhus University’s Research Fund (AUFF). This opportunity for funding is stopping due to cutbacks at AUFF. For future students, who are considering a research year, this means that they will have to have external financing in place at the time of application and the Head of Department must guarantee this, as before.

The application process has also been updated. This means, amongst other things, a shorter process.

  • The deadline for applications has been pushed forward to mid-May and mid-November (as opposed to mid-April and mid-October)
  • It will be crucial for your application, that you have attached a financial statement with a guarantee from the Head of Department
  • It will now be the relevant graduate programme leader who will assess the applications
  • If there are more qualified applicants than places, then grades from your bachelor’s degree will determine selection.
  • If you are thinking of applying in the next round, then you should be aware that the next round of applications will open mid-April. The new templates and sets of guidance will be available on the PhD school’s website by 1st April at the latest.

Don’t worry if you are in the middle of an application. There are very few changes to the information that we require from you. You can also still expect a reply in June and December.

The faculty has 112 research year places and the majority of students today have already financed their research year via external financing.

There are two annual open calls, one in the spring semester and one in the autumn semester. When there is an open call it is advertised here.

To apply for a research year, you must be enrolled at Aarhus University in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme in either Medicine or Odontology.

To be enrolled as a research year student, you must apply for enrolment and have your project approved and financed.

In our open calls you apply for either enrolment only or for both enrolment and scholarship.

Before you apply, please consult our application guide to learn about our online application form and mandatory elements of the application.

All research year applications are evaluated based on material submitted within the deadline, using the assessment criteria for research year applications. Please notice that your application will be rejected if one or more mandatory elements are not received within the deadline.

When all applications have been assessed by the Research Year/Student Research Committee, you get a reply to your application (see the timeline below).
