PhD project

Empowering Choices - Shared decision making in management of cervical precancer

Call for applications for a fully financed PhD fellowship

Project description

Currently, the choice of follow-up and/or treatment for precancer of the uterine cervix is solely dictated by clinical guidelines. With this project we aim to empower women with cervical precancer by developing a decision aid tool. By using a decision aid tool, the decision on treatment or follow-up will also be based on preferences by the patients given their life circumstances.

Firstly, the decision aid tool must be developed based on interviews with patients and clinicians. Hereby, the essential elements for deciding on clinical management will be identified. The decision aid tool will the be implemented and facilitate a shared-decision making process between the patient and the clinician. We will measure the patients' regret, anxiety, and the choice of follow-up or treatment based on whether they used the developed decision aid tool or not.

This project will recruit women with cervical precancer from various sites in Denmark (hospitals and private clinics).

The project will take place at the University Clinic for HPV-related Gynecological Disease, Gødstrup Hospital in collaboration with Center for Shared-decision Making, Sygehus Lillebælt, University Hospital of Southern Denmark. You will be working with a multidisciplinary team, including Professor Anne Hammer (main supervisor, MD, PhD), resident and postdoc Kathrine Dyhr Lycke (MD, PhD), Professor Karina Dahl Steffensen (MD, PhD), and consultant Annu Heinonen (MD, PhD), Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital.
