Call for applications for a fully financed PhD fellowship
We invite applications for a PhD position focused on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the quantification of brain tissue magnetic susceptibility.
Background: MRI is a cornerstone in the diagnosis of brain disorders, yet its full potential remains underutilized. By integrating MRI with biophysical modeling of tissue microstructure, it becomes possible to map tissue properties at the cellular level. At the Center for Functionally Integrative Neuroscience (CFIN), we have developed novel approaches to quantify magnetic susceptibility while accounting for the complexity of axonal microstructure. This methodology holds promise for improving diagnosis and staging of conditions characterized by iron accumulation and myelin degradation, such as various neurodegenerative diseases.
The successful applicant will contribute to the validation of these methods in both animal models and human participants. This includes designing experiments (e.g. MRI protocols), conducting advanced data analyses, and disseminating findings through scientific publications and conference presentations. The doctoral researcher will join the Neurophysics group at CFIN (www.cfin.a.dk), led by Prof. Sune Jespersen, and be based at Aarhus University, a transdisciplinary research center committed to advancing our understanding of the human brain. The center has access to state-of-the-art 9.4T and 16.4T Bruker MRI scanners, as well as other specialised scanners through extensive international collaborations.
A master's degree in physics, engineering or related fields.
