PhD project

Absorption of whey protein and magnesium in patients with gastrointestinal disease

Call for applications for a fully financed PhD fellowship. PhD fellowship opportunity in gastrointestinal health research.

Project description

The Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Aarhus University Hospital offers a unique PhD fellowship designed to address the critical issue of improving in-testinal absorption in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and/or ileostomy.

Patients with malabsorption often develop micronutrient deficiencies or dehydra-tion, adversely affecting kidney function, bone health and quality of life. This project explores the potential of oral whey protein solutions as a novel method to enhance intestinal absorption of energy and electrolytes, with a special focus on magnesium absorption. Magnesium repletion is particularly challenging in patients with malab-sorption. Treatment of magnesium deficiency is important because it is associated with gastrointestinal disease severity. Current treatment options are limited. This pro-ject aims to develop a new nutritional treatment modality that could potentially re-duce a need for parenteral support, improve quality of life, and prevent a range of complications.

We seek a highly motivated and ambitious PhD fellow prepared to conduct clinical trials and work both individually and cooperatively across disciplines. We prioritise candidates with relevant academic backgrounds and experience from similar pre-vious research.

The PhD fellow will have the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic and collabora-tive research community at the department, with approximately 25 other PhD fel-lows, research year students and postdocs. This supportive environment will provide ample opportunities for learning, growth, and professional development.
