PhD project

Primary prevention of child sexual abuse: Risk factors preceding first-time offending of child sexual abuse

Call for applications for a fully financed PhD fellowship

Project description

Child sexual abuse is estimated to affect 13,5% of girls and 5,6% of boys in Europe and is known to cause life-long consequences for the victims, families and society. Pre-abuse risk factors for first-time offenders of child sexual abuse are crucial to prevent child sexual abuse before it occurs.

Despite neurodevelopmental perturbation as a suggested etiology, little is known about neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, as pre-abuse risk factors for child sexual abuse offending.

This PhD attempts to increase knowledge on pre-abuse risk factors for first-time offenders of child sexual abuse, aiming to improve preventative measures, through three parts:

  1. A systematic review on known pre-abuse risk factors from existing lit-erature.
  2. A register-based explorative study on neurodevelopmental disorders as potential risk factors.
  3. An in-depth study of autism spectrum disorders as a potential risk fac-tor.

The focus of study 2 and 3 might change depending on findings in study 1, such that the most relevant potential risk factor are investigated. The de-cision of relevance is taken in consultation with various stakeholders in the field of child maltreatment detection and prevention.
This PhD also intends to advocate further research in the field.
