PhD project

Unraveling the molecular mechanisms in viral transformation and progression of HPV-related disease

Call for applications for a fully financed PhD fellowship

Project description

This PhD project aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms behind viral transformation and HPV-related disease progression. Current cervical cancer screening lacks reliable markers to distinguish between premalignant lesions that will progress or regress, leading to risks of over- and undertreatment. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for predicting lesion outcomes.

The project will identify molecular biomarkers and understand the microenvironment of cervical lesions that could serve as predictors for lesion progression. By analyzing tissue samples from women with premalignant cervical lesions, the project seeks to develop a clinical approach for assessing the risk of progression toward cervical cancer. This personalized approach would consider individual risk factors, providing women of reproductive age with more accurate treatment guidance. The ultimate goal is to improve decision-making around treatment, ensuring that patients receive appropriate interventions while avoiding unnecessary procedures.

The project takes place at the University Clinic for HPV-related Gynecological Disease, Gødstrup Hospital in collaboration with Dept. of Pathology Aarhus University Hospital. You will be working with a multidisciplinary team, including Professor Anne Hammer (main supervisor), Sara Bønløkke (MD, PhD), Associate Professor Marianne Waldstrøm (MD), and senior investigator at National Cancer Institute Lisa Mirabello.
